How to Choose the Right Phone Case for Your Smartphone
Clear, silicone, rugged or magnetic? How to pick a phone case that fits your exact model and actually protects it.

Start with your exact model
This is where most case returns come from. “iPhone 16” is not one phone: the 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max all have different dimensions and camera layouts, so a case cut for one will not sit correctly on another. The same applies across Galaxy S24 and S25, and Pixel generations.
Find the model name in Settings on the phone itself rather than going by memory, then match it to the compatibility list on the product page. Every case in our phone cases category lists the models it fits.
Match the case type to how you use the phone
Clear cases
Show the phone’s own finish, stay slim, and keep wireless charging working. Look for anti-yellowing material and raised bezels around the screen and camera.
Silicone cases
Grippier and more forgiving in the hand, which prevents a lot of drops in the first place. The soft finish picks up lint in pockets but wipes clean.
Rugged cases
Two-part construction and reinforced corners, for site work, sport or anyone who drops their phone regularly. Bulkier, and they need a case-friendly car mount.
Wallet cases
Convenient if you carry two or three cards. A detachable magnetic card holder is the better version, because you can take the cards off when you want to use a magnetic charger.
Check the protective details
- Raised screen lip — so a face-down drop lands on the case, not the glass.
- Raised camera ring — the camera glass sits proud on most modern phones and scratches easily.
- Corner reinforcement — corners take the impact in almost every drop.
- Button covers — they should click cleanly rather than feel mushy.
- Port cutout size — a tight cutout stops some third-party cables seating fully.
Cases and wireless charging
Most slim cases up to around 3mm thick charge wirelessly without any trouble. Thick rugged cases, metal plates and cases with cards left in them can interrupt it. If you use a magnetic charger or mount, choose a case with a magnetic ring built in — a plain case will hold far more weakly, if at all.
Pair it with screen protection
A case protects the body and corners. It does not protect the screen from a face-down landing on gravel. A tempered glass protector is the cheap half of the job, and the two together cost less than one screen repair.

Cheaper TPU can discolour over time with UV exposure. Look for anti-yellowing material, and note that any clear case will eventually show wear.
